McAllister has defender Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos after his red card against Aberdeen.

Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has been quoted by the Daily Record as defending striker Alfredo Morelos after his red card against Aberdeen – prompting Chris Sutton and Celtic fans to react on Twitter.

Morelos, 22, was adjudged to have stamp on Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna on Wednesday night during the Gers’ 4-2 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie. McKenna was also sent off for kicking Morelos in the face.

The Colombia international had scored a brace earlier on in the match, while James Tavernier and Jermain Defoe also found the back of the net – cancelling out Sam Cosgrove’s brace for Derek McInnes’ side.

McAllister was asked about the red card incident – which Rangers have since appealed – and he said that he felt Morelos made a “conscious effort” to get out of McKenna’s path.

“I felt Alfredo’s reputation went ahead of him in this one, I think he was trying to get out the way. He made a conscious effort not to stamp,” McAllister said.

It is the third time in four meetings between Rangers and Aberdeen that Morelos has been shown the red card, though he was reprieved for his first red earlier in the season.

Celtic legend Sutton and a whole host of Celtic fans have reacted to McAllister’s comments, questioning the Rangers assistant’s view of Morelos’s red card.
