Rangers have reduced Celtic’s allocation for December 29’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox.
Chris Sutton has aimed a cheeky swipe at Rangers ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League matches, after the Gers remained clear in their stance that they would not increase the 800-seat allocation given to Celtic for December 29.
Chairman Dave King reiterated in the Gers’ AGM earlier this week that Celtic would only receive 800 seats for the Old Firm clash taking place at Ibrox in a month’s time.
Rangers have made the decision after claiming that the Celtic players had tried to provoke Rangers fans after the last Old Firm derby, with the Hoops stars doing a lap of honour and celebrating the 1-0 win – which saw Olivier Ntcham score.
Celtic’s squad are renowned to do a lap of honour after every match – win, lose or draw – but Rangers have taken exception and decided to hand them just 800 seats. Sutton posted aimed a tongue-in-cheek jibe at Rangers on Twitter.
A police report from the previous Old Firm derby states that Celtic’s lap of honour and celebrations caused a surge of Rangers fans to confront the players – knocking over wheelchair users in the process.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has since hit back at the police report, being quoted by Sky Sports as saying that it is not his players who are to blame: “I think that is a little unfair. Our aim was never to antagonise or provoke any support.”
Celtic are in Norway taking on Rosenborg in a match they must win to keep their chances of European football after Christmas alive, while Rangers play host to Villarreal in an equally as crucial clash.
