The Rangers defender was adjudged to have been fouled by Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko.
Speaking during BT Sport’s coverage of Celtic versus Rangers in the Scottish League Cup semi-final, Chris Sutton has accused Clint Hill of diving to ensure Erik Sviatchenko’s goal was disallowed.
With the game tied at 0-0, the Hoops central defender thought he had opened the scoring when he headed home inside the penalty area.
Referee Craig Thompson quickly ruled out the strike, though, adjudging that Sviatchenko had fouled the veteran to get his header on goal.
It was naturally a decision that infuriated the Celtic players, with replays suggesting that Hill may have been fortunate to see the goal disallowed.
Sutton went one further, though, accusing the defender of diving and conning the match officials.
“For me, it’s six of one and half a dozen of another,” he told BT Sport.
“I think Clint Hill gets stuck under the ball. The goal should be allowed. Clint Hill dives.
“Hill is clever, he realises he’s stuck under the ball and he goes down too easily. He has conned the referee.”
Fortunately, the disallowed goal did not have any impact on the result as Celtic managed to snatch a win in the game.
They left it late to do so, with a superb Moussa Dembele flick nutmegging goalkeeper Matt Gilks to find its way into the Rangers net in the 87th minute.
In truth, it was no less than they deserved given the number of chances they had created throughout the game and means they will be the team taking on Aberdeen in the final.
