The former Tottenham Hotspur coach, now of Queens Park Rangers, was speaking about the Hull City midfielder’s announcement on Tuesday.
Ryan Mason’s former coach at Tottenham Hotspur has spoken of the great loss the Hull City midfielder’s retirement is for English football.
In an interview with Talksport on Tuesday afternoon, Chris Ramsey – now technical director at Queens Park Rangers – described Mason as “one of best youth players I’ve ever seen”.
He also claimed Mason would have had more England caps and may never have left Tottenham were it not for injuries, the last of which – a fractured skull caused by a clash of heads with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill while playing for Hull last year – brought a premature end to his career on Tuesday.
Hull – who paid a club record fee of around £10 million for Mason in 2016 – were relegated in the 26-year-old’s absence.
And Ramsey added: “He was ready to go again [at Hull]. And they’ve missed him. I think he would have probably got sold on from there.”
Mason was instead forced to watch on helplessly as Hull slid further down the English league ladder toward their current resting place of 21st in the Championship.
His retirement, though, may not signal the end of his involvement in football, with Ramsey revealing: “As a coach, I’m hopefully trying to entice him into that now.”
And a return to Tottenham, or even Ramsey’s QPR, may be on the cards.
