Derby County caretaker manager Chris Powell has revealed that he has been given no assurances over his future at the club with current boss Nigel Pearson suspended, as reported by the Sun.

Pearson was suspended by the Rams pending an investigation after falling out badly with chairman Mel Morris last week, and his assistant Powell took temporary control in his absence.

Powell has impressed so far in a leading role, guiding the club to a win and a draw in his first two games, something which has sparked some talk that he could be handed the job on a permanent basis.

However, the former defender has insisted that he has been given no such indication by the club, maintaining that he remains purely focused on doing the job at hand in the short-term, and suggested that things will have become clearer by the end of the international break.

When asked by the Sun if he had been given any indication that he would be given the job on a permanent basis, Powell replied: “None whatsoever. What I have always done is make sure I was ready for whenever an opportunity arose, and it arose here at Derby as assistant manager, and that is what I am at this present time.

“My role has not changed but of course in light of last week I have just had to lead from the front alongside Kevin Phillips and Pascal Zuberbuhler. I haven’t been thinking about anything else. We will see what the future holds.

“I was asked to take the team on Tuesday and again on Saturday, and nothing beyond that. Now there is an international break, we don’t play for two weeks, and I am sure the club will decide what way to go. I am sure the club will resolve all issues and make sure we move forward in the right way.”

Powell is a popular figure at the iPro Stadium, and far less divisive than Pearson, having been named the Supporters’ Player of the Year during his spell at the club in the late 1990s.

He would likely be a favoured choice amongst many Rams fans, but it remains to be seen whether he will have a future at the East Midlands club beyond the next fortnight.
