Chris Maguire has told the Sunderland Echo that Sunderland fans nicknaming him the ‘king’ of their team has led to him getting stick from his teammates.

Maguire has arguably been Sunderland’s best player so far this season, following his move to the Stadium of Light in the summer.

The attacker has dazzled with his skill and creativity, with Jack Ross seemingly bringing the very best out of him.

Maguire scored the winner for Sunderland last night against Doncaster Rovers, to further cement his status as a fans’ favourite.

And Maguire admits that his popularity is earning him some stick from his teammates.

He said: “I don’t know where it’s come from but it’s stuck and all the boys are giving me a bit of stick for it.

”But if that’s what the fans are requesting then you’ve got to try and live up to it! It’s a bit of a banter, and it is nice to get that appreciation from fans. It’s up to me to keep putting the performances in and keep chipping in with the goals as well.”

Sunderland’s win over Doncaster yesterday has elevated them into third place in the League One table.

Ross’ side seem to be really finding the groove now, as they keep the pressure on the top two.

Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Southend United.
