Iwelumo played alongside the Sheffield Wednesday forward at Watford.

Chris Iwelumo was full of praise for Sheffield Wednesday’s Fernando Forestieri during Saturday’s episode of Football on 5: The Championship.

Forestieri was instrumental in Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, winning and scoring the penalty which put the Owls in front at Molineux and starting the move that led to Kieran Lee’s winner by stealing the ball from Richard Stearman’s toes and picking out Lucas Joao, who supplied the cut-back.

After finding the net twice in as many matches, the Italian looks to have finally rediscovered the form he showed last season, in which his 15 goals and seven assists fired Carlos Carvalhal’s side to the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

And Iwelumo, who played alongside Forestieri at Watford, could not help but praise his former teammate – despite his old side Wolves becoming the 26-year-old’s latest victims.

“He just ticks all the boxes,” the former Scotland international said. “He’s a fantastic technical player, great character, and I loved playing with him – he did a lot of my running to be fair.

“He’s got everything. He scores goals, his work rate, chasing things down, he’s non-stop. He’s always on the move looking for different angles, areas.

“That was his issue at Watford, probably not consistently showing it, but he’s doing that at Sheffield Wednesday.

“Every time he gets the ball he’s looking for the next move, he’s a couple of steps ahead of every opponent and most of the time he makes the right decision.”

Wednesday’s win was their first by a two-goal margin all season and moved them back into play-off contention, with sixth-place Huddersfield now only a point above them.

Forestieri has now scored five goals and created another two in 12 starts this campaign.
