Chris Gotterup picked up the third PGA Tour win of his career at the Sony Open on Sunday.
Gotterup has shown remarkable mental strength over the past six months, following up his Scottish Open victory and a maiden win at the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic by taking down the Sony Open as well.
On Thursday, Gotterup explained that an off-season move to Florida helped him hit the ground running in this year’s PGA Tour opener.
At just 26, he looks like someone who could soon be mixing it with Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy at the top of leaderboards.
He is a powerful hitter who has shown enough over this stretch to suggest he has got a very promising future ahead.
And speaking after his victory in Hawaii, Gotterup revealed something that had lifted a weight off his shoulders.
Chris Gotterup shares financial benefit he received after Sony Open win

Waking up on Monday, the 26-year-old will still be riding the high from his latest win.
His third title not only adds to an already impressive start to his career but also provides financial security following his strong performance at Waialae Country Club.
Speaking about whether his win sets him up well for the 2026 season, Gotterup replied: “I mean, hopefully pretty good. You couldn’t dream up a better start.”
“This is big for me, too, because this kicks in the five-year whatever it’s called for retirement reasons. Now I don’t have to worry about that. Not that I was, but it’s just a nice bonus.
“There are a lot of nice things that come with it.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s just a big – you never know how you’re going to start the year and to start like this is really icing on the cake.”
Breaking down the PGA Tour’s retirement system
To access the PGA Tour’s pension fund, players need a minimum of five years of service.
Thanks to his win at the Sony Open, Gotterup is now guaranteed to meet that requirement, as his victory secures him a full exemption for another two years.
This win in Hawaii has put Gotterup in a strong position for the future.
With this added security, there is every chance he will add plenty more titles to his record over time.
And based on how he performed last week in Hawaii, it looks like he is fully capable of making that happen.
