Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino confronted referee Mike Dean on Saturday.
Writing in The Daily Mail, former Premier League referee Chris Foy says that Mike Dean might’ve been right to award Burnley the corner against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Tottenham’s Premier League title hopes suffered a big blow in losing 2-1 at Turf Moor yesterday afternoon.
But the result was overshadowed by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino angrily confronting Dean and his officials at full time, in response to a dubious corner.
The Clarets opened the scoring on 57 minutes from a set-piece that television replays suggest could have been a goal kick for Pochettino’s side.
And Foy has criticised the Argentine manager for his behaviour, claiming that the evidence he has seen does not definitively prove that Dean was wrong to award the corner.
He wrote in The Daily Mail: “Of course there’s no need for managers to confront referees any more because of the 30-minute window which has been introduced. It was brought in to enable managers to have a breather, calm down, and then come and knock on the referee’s door and talk things through.
“Pochettino was angry over the award of the corner for Burnley’s first goal where two players — Jeff Hendrick and Jan Vertonghen — clashed for the ball on the byline. I have seen all the footage and there isn’t any to prove the match officials were wrong.”
Foy’s comments won’t go down well with Spurs fans.
It isn’t the first time that the former official has infuriated those on the white side of North London, having rejected several penalty appeals, chalked off a legitimate Emmanuel Adebayor goal and sent off Younes Kaboul during a defeat at Stoke City back in 2011.
Tottenham are third in the Premier League table, five points behind co-leaders Liverpool and Manchester City, but Jurgen Klopp’s side can extend that to eight points by winning at Old Trafford today.
