Chris Davies has told Celtic’s official website that he has been impressed with defender Filip Benkovic, after the Leicester City loanee joined the club towards the end of the transfer window.

The 21-year-old has managed just three appearances for the Hoops since joining the Scottish champions from Claude Puel’s Leicester, but is likely to feature more frequently over the busy Christmas period.

Benkovic, who joined Leicester from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer before moving to Celtic almost immediately after, cost the Foxes a whopping £13million according to Sky Sports.

Assistant manager Davies spoke of Benkovic highly to Celtic’s website ahead of Saturday’s clash with Neil Lennon’s Hibernian, and expects the centre-back to be useful in the opposition box too.

“I’ve been impressed with Filip. We did our work before he came in so we knew all about his qualities. He is very imposing with his size and he’s dominant aerially. He’s good attacking aerially as well, although he hasn’t scored yet,” Benkovic said.

“He’s a big imposing figure and is technically good on the ball. He can play short and long passes with quality and is a defender who can defend with good aggression. Hopefully with momentum and playing games, that’ll get him really going.”

Filip Benkovic of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the UEFA Europa League Group B match between Celtic and Rosenborg at Celtic Park on September 20, 2018 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Benkovic has appeared against Rosenborg, St. Mirren and St. Johnstone, and could be included in the side to face Hibs on Saturday. But he faces competition from the likes of Dedryck Boyata, Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic.

Celtic currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership table behind Hibernian and Hearts, while bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers sit in sixth place. They travel to the SuperSeal stadium to face Hamilton.
