Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies has suggested to The Scottish Sun that the club were interested in Henry Onyekuru before the youngster joined Everton from Eupen.

Premier League club Everton signed 20-year-old forward Onyekuru from Belgian club Eupen in the summer transfer window.

According to The Scottish Sun, the Toffees had to pay Eupen a transfer fee of £7 million in order to secure the services of the youngster this summer.

Onyekuru is not part of the Everton first team at the moment, having been loaned out to Belgian giants Anderlecht for the 2017-18 campaign.

The Nigeria international forward will play against Celtic in the Champions League this season, as Anderlecht have been drawn in the same group as the Bhoys.

“I know about Onyekuru,” Davies told The Scottish Sun. “I’ve seen him play quite a few times. He is a talent. He has pace and technical ability and got goals in the second half of last season.

“He is someone we had looked at, someone we had monitored over an extended period, but it was never that close. He was just a player we liked and were aware of more than anything.

“There was a lot of speculation that he was going to other teams and a lot of clubs’ scouting departments were also looking at him as well, so he had attracted a lot of interest.

“He has gone back on loan to Belgium and he is going to be a threat but we have equal and better threats that we can put on to a pitch.”
