Celtic assistant boss Chris Davies has spoken of his admiration for winger Patrick Roberts.

Celtic assistant boss Chris Davies has told the club’s official website that he was excited to be working with Bhoys winger Patrick Roberts.

Celtic continued their outstanding league campaign with a 5-2 away win over St Johnstone, meaning they have now dropped just two points in the league this season.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are coasting towards the Scottish Premiership table, sitting 27 points clear of Aberdeen and Rangers, who sit second and third respectively.

Rodgers has helped develop the likes of Stuart Armstrong and James Forrest this season, and Patrick Roberts is another player showing his potential under the Celtic boss.

Roberts, 20, is into the final six months of his 18-month loan spell with Celtic, having arrived from Manchester City in January 2016 under Ronny Deila’s management.

The England Under-20 international has now hit 11 goals in 45 games for Celtic, and hit the headlines earlier this season when he scored for the Bhoys against City in the Champions League.

Roberts is scheduled to head back to the Etihad Stadium this summer, but Celtic could pursue an extension to his loan deal in a bid to keep in Glasgow for next season as well.

Now, Celtic assistant boss Chris Davies has told the club’s official website that he and Rodgers had been tracking then-Fulham talent Roberts during their time working together at Liverpool, and his quality meant that Davies was excited to work with him at Celtic Park.

“We were aware of Patrick at Liverpool when he was in the Fulham youth ranks and what a talent he was coming through,” said Davies. “The opportunity to come and work with him was something I was personally excited about and, having worked with him close hand, he is a player with an enormous talent.”

“He more or less got an assist for the first goal at the weekend, having had the initial shot. That part of his game of making penetrative runs in behind without the ball to get shots in will be another thing he will develop. He has been progressing well, he’s a real talent with enormous potential and he has definitely improved as the season has gone on. I’m sure he will have a great career ahead of him,” he added.
