Chris Coleman has told the Northern Echo that Joel Asoro has already made himself indispensable to Sunderland.

Asoro has been one of the few bright spots at the Stadium of Light this season, with the youngster impressing.

The Swedish-born forward scored in Sunderland’s 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough last weekend, and already looks at home in Coleman’s side’s first-team.

With Sunderland set to take on Millwall at the weekend, Asoro was once again expected to play a key part.

However, the forward has picked up a knock against Boro, which could leave him sidelined.

And Coleman is praying that Asoro wins his battle to be fit, as he has already become so pivotal for his side.

“Joel got a whack against Middlesbrough, somebody went through him right at the end. He needed to come off, he had a right whack on his knee,” Coleman said.

“He got through it but he was in pieces after the game. It was right after I made that substitution. Touch wood he is OK. He is on the treatment table now.

“He is only 19 so for me to say we can’t afford to lose him is pretty brutal but that’s where we are.”

Sunderland are currently rooted to the bottom of the Championship table, with time running out.

Even if the Black Cats are able to beat Millwall, they will remain in the relegation zone, but could climb to within a point of safety.
