John O’Shea joined Sunderland back in 2011.

Chris Coleman manager of Sunderland looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Birmingham City and Sunderland at St Andrews on January 30, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

Sunderland boss Chris Coleman has been quoted as saying by The Sunderland Echo that John O’Shea is easy to manage.

O’Shea has been on the books of Sunderland since the summer of 2011 when he joined from Manchester United for a transfer fee reported by The Independent to be worth £5 million.

The Republic of Ireland international, who can operate as a defender or as a defensive midfielder, has established himself as an important player for Sunderland.

Coleman, who was appointed the Sunderland manager in November 2017, has spoken highly of O’Shea, and has said that the veteran does not miss a single day in training.

The Sunderland Echo quotes Coleman as saying when asked what it is like to manage O’Shea: “It’s easy. He sets his own standards in training, he never misses a game.

“He’s an excellent role model to our younger players, and even at 36 he never misses a day in training, lives right.”

Character and leadership

O’Shea is past his prime, and his performances in the 22 Championship matches that he has played in for Sunderland so far this season have not been great.

However, the Republic of Ireland international will be important for the Black Cats between now and the end of the season.

With Sunderland struggling for survival in the Championship at the moment, the former United star will be important, as he has the character and the leadership needed for the team.
