Rangers are still searching for a successor to Pedro Caixinha.
Wales boss Chris Coleman has told the Daily Mail that he isn’t keen on a job in the Premier League, as he wants to live his dream of managing in the Champions League.
Coleman, 47, has been the manager of Wales for almost six years, having landed the job in January 2012, just days after he left Greek side Larissa.
The former Fulham defender and manager has impressed in charge of his country, guiding them not only to the European Championships in France last year, but also in the semi-finals of that tournament.
Coleman had hoped to take Wales into the World Cup next year, but their qualifying hopes ended in October, and speculation has surrounded his future ever since.
Many expect Coleman to leave his post in the near future, but he has now told the Daily Mail that he wants to manage in the Champions League, and given that he won’t get a job with a Premier League team that have those aspirations, he may look elsewhere.
“I have always stressed I would love to experience working in the Champions League,” said Coleman. “I am not going to get that from a club in the Premier League. It is just not going to happen, not now. To do that, I would probably have to travel.”
“There are very few managers that are in a position to say where they want to work. Jobs in the industry are few and far between,” he added.
One of the few available jobs that may give Coleman some hope of Champions League football is Rangers, who are still searching for a new manager having sacked Pedro Caixinha last month.
Champions League football seems a long way away for Rangers right now, but any appointment will be given the remit of usurping champions and Old Firm rivals Celtic, and doing so would hand the Gers a chance at Champions League football.
Coleman may well recognise that opportunity, as his Champions League dream seems far more achievable with a team like Rangers over the next five years than it would with a struggling Championship side like Sunderland – who are also searching for a manager – and it may be worth Rangers exploring the possibility of temping Coleman to Ibrox.
