Sunderland defender Marc Wilson started in Chris Coleman’s side’s last match.

Sunderland boss Chris Coleman has told the Chronicle that people often forget how badly Marc Wilson has struggled with injuries recently.

Wilson has missed much of the campaign, after failing to stay off the treatment table.

However, he was selected in Sunderland’s latest starting line-up, as Coleman’s side picked up a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

And the Welsh boss feels that Wilson showed his quality at Elland Road, as his display impressed.

“I think people forget Marc’s had a lot of injuries – it’s been stop-start for him so we haven’t been able to get him to a position to play 90 minutes, then 90 minutes,” said Coleman.

“He missed a lot of football but he’s an international footballer who’s played most of his (club) games in the top-flight at full-back, central defender, holding midfielder – he’s one of those players.

“He did very, very well and he just let Aiden (McGeady) go. He didn’t really overlap, he’s never going to give you that but he was just back-up and defensively he looked very good.”

Wilson looks likely to remain in Sunderland’s first-team for the remainder of the season, as Coleman looks to tighten things up at the back.

Sunderland have leaked goals throughout the campaign, but they simply cannot afford for any more defensive errors.

The Black Cats are staring relegation in the face, and only a miraculous run will save them now.

Sunderland are currently seven points adrift of safety, with their next match coming against Norwich City tomorrow evening.
