Sunderland may have no funds to spend in the January transfer window.

Wales' manager Chris Coleman follows the game from the touchline during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification football match between Georgia and Wales in Tbilisi on October 6, 2017.

Chris Coleman has admitted to the Sunderland Echo that Martin Bain was ‘brutally honest’ with him over Sunderland’s transfer budget in the January transfer window, prior to him taking the job at the Stadium of Light.

Coleman says that Sunderland may have no money at all to invest in their squad in the new year, which limits his options.

Coleman is now looking for loan deals, as he looks to strengthen his squad at the Stadium of Light.

“Martin was brutally honest with me and said there is no money guaranteed for January,” the former Wales boss said.

“Depending on if we do lose a player or receive money for a player or players, then it’s very possible that we can reinvest but that’s not to say there’s not going to be nothing either. I wasn’t promised a transfer kitty in January to go and buy A, B and C.

“He was brutally honest with me – there may be no money in. January to go and reinvest but that doesn’t mean we can’t go and strengthen the squad with some loan deals.”

Sunderland having no money to spend is a major blow, as the North East side could certainly do with an injection of quality.

The Black Cats are currently sat in the Championship’s relegation zone, after what has been a disastrous start to the season.

Coleman has made a positive start since taking over at Sunderland though, and helped the Wearsiders win for just the second time this term during his last match in charge against Burton Albion.

Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Reading at the Stadium of Light.
