Oliver McBurnie joined Barnsley on loan from Swansea City in the January transfer window, while Ashley Fletcher made the loan switch from Middlesbrough to Sunderland.

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman has suggested to ChronicleLive that he wanted to sign Oliver McBurnie from Swansea City in the January transfer window.

McBurnie moved to Championship club Barnsley on loan from Swansea in the January transfer window.

“Oli is a good player, but there’s quite a few players we were looking at in January,” Coleman told ChronicleLive. “He’s not our problem now. We have the players we have.”

Missed chance

McBurnie has been superb for Barnsley since his loan switch from Swansea in the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old striker has scored five goals in five league starts for the Tykes, and has been named the Championship Player of the Month for February.

While the Scotland Under-21 international striker is playing well, Ashley Fletcher is struggling at Sunderland at the moment.

The 22-year-old former West Ham United striker joined the Black Cats on loan from Championship rivals Middlesbrough in the January transfer window.

The former Manchester United prospect has made six appearances in the league for Sunderland so far this season, and has failed to score.

Both Sunderland and Barnsley are in danger of getting relegated from the Championship to League One at the end of the season.
