Sunderland boss Chris Coleman would not rule out a move for Bournemouth’s Jermain Defoe in January.

Wales' manager Chris Coleman follows the game from the touchline during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification football match between Georgia and Wales in Tbilisi on October 6, 2017.

Chris Coleman has intriguingly not ruled out making a move to bring Jermain Defoe back to Sunderland in the January transfer window, as per his comments in the Sunderland Echo.

Defoe was Sunderland’s shining light last term, when the Black Cats were relegated from the Premier League.

The veteran forward banged in goals aplenty, but was unable to stop Sunderland falling to the drop.

Defoe’s good form earned him a move to Bournemouth, but the England international has struggled to impress at Dean Court.

There is now a feeling that Defoe could make a swift exit from the south coast club.

And while Coleman did not suggest that Sunderland were in the race for Defoe, he did not rule the transfer out.

“Jermain belongs to Eddie Howe at Bournemouth and I wouldn’t comment on somebody else’s player. I don’t think it’s fair and I wouldn’t want somebody commenting on our player,” Coleman said, when asked whether he would be interested in bringing back Defoe.

If Defoe did rejoin Sunderland it would surely be a dream transfer for supporters at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland are currently struggling in the Championship, but Defoe would have the quality to fire the Black Cats away from the relegation zone and to safety.
