Chris Coleman has told the Sunderland Echo that he believes Sunderland’s Darron Gibson has been excellent in his side’s last two fixtures.

Gibson has endured a difficult time at Sunderland since arriving at Everton in January, but he appears to have been given a new lease of life under Coleman.

The Republic of Ireland international has started in Sunderland’s last two matches, against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham, and his performances have caught the eye.

Gibson has set the tone for his Sunderland performances with a couple of combative displays.

And after Sunderland beat Fulham 1-0 at the Stadium of Light this weekend, Coleman was full of praise for the midfielder.

He said: “He was the only really natural holding midfielder we had, so he was in there a lot by himself.

“He had to cover a lot of ground because you don’t want to stop George (Honeyman) and Lynden (Gooch) from running forward.

“But it wasn’t just that, I felt his decision-making was excellent, talking to the players around him, staying central unless he really had to move. He’s been excellent the last two games.”

Gibson appears to be turning his Sunderland career around at the same time that the Black Cats are getting back on track themselves.

Sunderland have been abject for much of the season so far, but they have taken seven points from Coleman’s first five games in charge to move out of the relegation zone.
