Sunderland defender John O’Shea has impressed with his performances since arriving at the Stadium of Light.

Wales' manager Chris Coleman follows the game from the touchline during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification football match between Georgia and Wales in Tbilisi on October 6, 2017.

Chris Coleman has told the Chronicle that John O’Shea has been one of the most impressive players in Sunderland’s squad since he arrived at the club.

O’Shea has played a vital role at the Stadium of Light since Coleman arrived, with the centre-back starting in every match the Welsh boss has taken charge of.

Despite being 36, O’Shea has shown no signs of fatigue and Coleman believes that the former Manchester United defender’s experience is key.

“Every day he is one of the best trainers. Eats well, trains well, recovers well. Talks brilliantly,” Coleman said.

“If you’ve got over 100 caps for Republic of Ireland and played over 250 times for Man United, that’s not a coincidence is it? You are cut from a certain cloth clearly.

“He’s been great with young Tyias (Browning), because it’s not easy in that position when you are where we are.”

O’Shea initially helped Sunderland’s defence tighten up during Coleman’s time in charge, but their old problems were exposed last weekend.

Sunderland were beaten 3-0 by Sheffield United in their most recent outing, after what was a highly disappointing performance.

Coleman’s men never got going at Bramall Lane, as the promotion Blades sliced through them time after time.

Sunderland have now slipped back into the relegation zone, with the pressure on them to return to winning ways quickly.

The Black Cats are next in action tomorrow, when they take on Nottingham Forest.
