Sunderland and Middlesbrough ended up playing out a 3-3 draw at the Stadium of Light yesterday.

Chris Coleman has told the Gazette that he felt that fast-paced nature of Sunderland’s game against Middlesbrough got to Jake Clarke-Salter.

Clarke-Salter was sent off in the first half of the contest, after lunging in to a terrible tackle.

The defender could have no complaints about his dismissal, as the challenge was late and reckless.

And Coleman admits that the pace of the game may have caught the inexperienced defender off guard.

“Jake Clarke-Salter knows he can’t tackle like that, and I think the game and the tempo maybe got the better of him. He’s a cracking boy, a great kid, but he got that one wrong,” Coleman admitted.

Clarke-Salter’s sending off was just the start of the drama, on what was a pulsating encounter at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland were not numerically disadvantaged for too long, as Adama Traore was also sent off for Boro and it made for an open game.

In the end, the match finished as a 3-3 draw, with Sunderland scoring a last minute equaliser through Callum McManaman.

The point keeps Sunderland within touching distance of safety, but they desperately need victories between now and the end of the season, if they are to stay in the division.
