Sunderland could lose loanee Lewis Grabban in January with Bournemouth considering selling the striker to Wolves or Fulham.
Chris Coleman would have been fully aware that it was unlikely he’d be able to keep his Sunderland side intact during the January transfer window.
With debts spiralling and funds low, The Northern Echo reports that the Black Cats must cash in on some of their high-earners and prized assets at the turn of the year. It is understood that Lamine Kone, Didier Ndong and £60,000-a-week Jack Rodwell are all to be made available.
One player Coleman would be loath to lose, however, is Lewis Grabban. One of the signings of the season in the Championship, the Bournemouth loanee’s 10 goals in 13 starts have ensured that Sunderland have not been cut adrift at the bottom of the table.
No other player in the Black Cats’ squad has scored more than four. So it’s fair to say that new manager Coleman would have been pinning his hopes on Grabban as he aims to guide Sunderland away from the bottom three.
So just imagine the distress if Grabban is taken away from Sunderland in January. Per TEAMtalk, parent club Bournemouth put a recall clause in the 29-year-old’s contract which would allow them to cut his loan spell short midway through the season.
It is understood that Bournemouth may exercise this option which Championship duo Wolves and Fulham willing to pay a transfer fee to sign Grabban on a permanent deal. With league leaders Wolves needing one more striker, it appears that the former Norwich City goalscorer could be the final piece in their promotion jigsaw.
But this is pretty much the nightmare scenario for Coleman. How would a Sunderland side who spent the lowest amount on transfer fees in the summer manage to finance a replacement for Grabban?
