Sunderland striker Lewis Grabban has scored 10 goals in the Championship already this season.

Chris Coleman has told the Shields Gazette that Lewis Grabban’s goalscoring record for Sunderland is a huge positive.

Sunderland have been in abject form so far this season, but Grabban has done well, despite limited service.

The Bournemouth loanee has netted 10 goals already, which puts him among the leading scorers in the Championship.

But Coleman insists that Sunderland cannot simply rely on Grabban to score, without others chipping in.

“Lewis is offering himself to the cause by scoring goals, he keeps on scoring which is a huge positive,” Coleman said. “But we’re conceding goals. So what do we do? Do we put 10 men behind the ball for 90 minutes and hope Lewis may grab a goal?

“I’m not sure that’s the way to go. I think that’s false sense of security. I think we’ve got to be more positive when we’re in possession.

“We’ve got to attack more and try and score more goals so that if we concede one at least we’ve scored three.”

Coleman has already sparked an improvement in Sunderland’s team, with the Black Cats winning for just the second time this season against Burton Albion.

Sunderland beat the Brewers 2-0, with James Vaughan and George Honeyman getting on the scoresheet.

Vaughan’s goal may be of particular importance to Coleman, as it was only the striker’s second strike of the campaign.

Sunderland moved off the foot of the Championship table with their win over Burton, and are next in action at the weekend when they take on Reading.
