Jake Clarke-Salter has joined Sunderland on loan until the end of the season.
Clarke-Salter was brought to Sunderland in January, and he has immediately been plunged into Coleman’s starting line-up.
However, the centre-back was red-carded against Middlesbrough recently, which has left him suspended.
Clarke-Salter missed out on featuring for Sunderland against Millwall, and Coleman admits it was a blow to be without the centre-back.
“We were missing Jake Clarke-Salter, who I think would thrive in a game like Saturday’s, with a bit of fight in it,” Coleman said.
“But the players we’ve got fit, train every day and play week in, week out are doing what they can. In the last three games, they’ve done what they can.
“That’s what we’ve got and it’s going to get us to where we need to be.”
Even without Clarke-Salter, Sunderland managed to pick up a credible draw against Millwall.
The Black Cats claimed a point at The Den, with Bryan Oviedo scoring their goal.
The Costa Rican international gave Sunderland the lead with a fine strike, and although they were unable to hold on, Coleman’s men still picked up a point.
Sunderland are still four points adrift of safety, with their next match coming against Aston Villa tomorrow.
