Chris Coleman has told the Shields Gazette that he had to change Sunderland’s style to accommodate Jonny Williams.

Williams made his return to Sunderland’s team last weekend, and he made a big impact.

The Welsh international scored during Sunderland’s 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough, with the attacking midfielder’s display drawing a lot of praise.

“It was great for Jonny, he’s had a real tough season,” Coleman said.

“When we lost Paddy McNair we lost a lot, especially in the Championship, that type of player can change your life really.

“Jonny is a completely different type of player so we had to change everything.

“But the energy from the whole team was very positive, and it was a super finish from Jonny at the end of a real good move.”

Sunderland’s 3-3 draw with Boro has proven that they still have some fight in them left.

The Black Cats are stuck at the bottom of the Championship table, and really need to start picking up victories, if they are to avoid back-to-back relegations.

If Williams stays fit he could be a key player for Coleman’s side between now and the end of the campaign, as he is one of the most talented players in their squad.

Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Millwall at The Den.
