Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on the Villarreal man.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will surely be looking to bolster his attacking options this month, as he looks to reinforce his options ahead of what will be a long and arduous second half of their campaign.
One of his key targets is Villarreal ace Cedric Bakambu, with Spanish media outlet Marca reporting that Tottenham are weighing up a move for the striker.
Their hope’s of signing the 26-year-old appear to have suffered a blow today, however, with Marca claiming that Chinese side Beijing Guoan are ready to activate his €40 million (£35.5 million) release clause.
Harry Kane will be Spurs’ number one striker for as long as he remains at the club, but Pochettino needs an able deputy for the England international, with Fernando Llorente failing to prove that he is up to the job.
Following the report from Marca, though, it looks as though the Argentine will have to look at alternative targets to Bakambu.
A lot can happen between now and the end of January, however, and if the Lilywhites are prepared to meet the Congolese’s release clause, there is no reason why they cannot still win the race to sign him.
