Bristol City talisman Tammy Abraham just can’t stop scoring – and he’d be an inspired replacement for Jermain Defoe at Sunderland.
The startling fact that Jermain Defoe has scored around 60 per cent of Sunderland’s Premier League goals this season brings to mind one word; irreplaceable.
However, according to the Daily Mirror, The Black Cats are facing up to the daunting prospect of doing without their one-man attacking band. Defoe reportedly has an exit clause in his contract, meaning he will be allowed to leave the Stadium of Light on a free transfer if, and most probably when, Sunderland succumb to relegation.
Fortunately, manager David Moyes used his Easter Monday to good effect, watching a striker who has been equally essential to his team’s hopes. Without the 22 Championship goals plundered by Tammy Abraham, Bristol City would surely be wedged alongside Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers in the relegation mire.
According to The Chronicle, Moyes was in attendance for The Robins’ clash with Blackburn Rovers, purportedly to watch on loan Southampton striker Sam Gallagher. However, while the Rovers targetman would have caught Moyes’ eye with a precise header, Abraham again grabbed the headlines with an ingenious flicked finish to ensure a 1-1 draw.
He’s now only three behind the league’s top scorer, Chris Wood, and no teenager in Championship history has ever been so prolific.
And though the 19-year-old told Football London that his next target is breaking into the first team of parent club Chelsea, their less than inspiring record with regards to blooding young talents suggests that’s easier said than done.
If manager Antonio Conte wants Abraham to prove himself again before allowing him to compete with Diego Costa, another loan could be on the agenda.
And Moyes would surely jump at the chance having witnessed this prodigious goal poacher first hand.
