Chelsea have a plan to stop Eden Hazard from moving to PSG this summer and it’s quite a simple one.
Improve his contract to the tune of £200,000 per week.
The Belgian has been regularly courted by the Ligue One side, one of the few teams in the world in a position to fund a £60 million bid for the playmaker.
Chelsea have responded to the fresh speculation by awarding Hazard his favoured number ten shirt for the coming season and reports now suggest he’s in line for a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho has shown no willingness to let his best midfielder leave and while the player himself has admitted that PSG are appealing, he has no immediate motive to turn his back on the Stamford Bridge side.
Hazard was Chelsea’s outstanding performer last season and at times he looked world class in the Chelsea attack.
It’s not uncommon for sides to improve a player’s contract at the end of a good season to stop him from feeling undervalued and subsequently moving on to a rival.
Hazard’s representatives have already started taking the matter into their own hands according to the Daily Mail, meeting discreetly with the French club whether that’s with or without the player’s permission.
Therefore, Chelsea need to nip this in the bud as quickly as possible.
Interestingly, the £200,000 per week mentioned is the same amount that PSG were reportedly going to offer Hazard as an initial deal to move to France.
PSG could react with the promise of an even bigger contract though for tax reasons, the Belgian would earn more if he decided to stay in the UK where the tax rate for higher income earners is lower.
The biggest winner is Hazard but Chelsea will be very happy to shell out to keep one of their best players for next season.
