Are Tottenham making a mistake waiting until Everton’s Ross Barkley becomes a free agent with Chelsea ready to offer cash in January?

Chelsea are preparing to renew their interest in Everton’s Ross Barkley when the transfer window reopens on January 1, reports the Telegraph.

Barkley rejected the chance to join the Blues on the final day of the summer window, but the West London club will return in the new year with another cash offer.

This is despite the fact the midfielder has not yet played for the Toffees this season due to injury and is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

It is for that reason that fellow interested party, Tottenham Hotspur, are willing to bide their time and wait for Barkley to potentially become a free agent before making their move.

Yet is this a little risky for Spurs and could see them missing out on a key target to one of their major rivals because they weren’t prepared to part with any money?

Barkley’s current club are keen to have his future resolved by the end of January, so despite a switch to Tottenham having seemed the most likely it now looks like Stamford Bridge could well be the 24-year-old’s next permanent destination.
