Chelsea have reportedly joined the growing race to sign Atalanta wonderkid Giorgio Scalvini, with Liverpool and Manchester United also interested in the 19-year-old.

According to Corriere della Sera, the west London side have joined the competition for the Italian international as Scalvini looks primed for a big move in the summer transfer window, with Atalanta in a position where they need to sell if they are to buy in the off-season.

As per the report, Scalvini has a release clause of €40m (£34m), and based on how good the centre-back has been this season, the defender could be a potential bargain unless Atalanta find a way to award the youngster a new contract with an increased fee.

Lauded by Gazzetta dello Sport as a ‘generational’ talent, it makes sense why Chelsea are now interested in signing Scalvini, with Todd Boehly providing Graham Potter with some of the most exciting talents in Europe in the form of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and David Datro Fofana.

Indeed, the American businessman already looks primed to spend big yet again in the summer, and with centre-backs needed at Chelsea, Scalvini seems like a logical target for the west London side, though a lack of UEFA Champions League football could be a major issue.

With United in the top-three and Liverpool an outside bet to finish in fourth, Scalvini could be more convinced to join a Premier League side competing in the Champions League, something many pundits and fans can comfortably predict Chelsea will not be in next season.

Chelsea’s transfer plan and overall vision under Potter will take some years to click, yet as a result, some short-term goals might not be achieved based on their placing in the Premier League, which will likely result in the Blues missing out on Scalvini.

As mentioned, a lack of Champions League football could see Chelsea struggle to sign numerous targets in the summer, with Scalvini a player who could want to play for United or Liverpool if the English duo qualify for Europe’s elite competition.
