Chelsea could reportedly be forced into selling Ben Chilwell this summer amid interest from Manchester City, with the Blues set for a huge summer clearout.

According to the Athletic, the England international could be one of nearly a dozen senior players to leave Stamford Bridge as Graham Potter looks to trim down his senior squad of 30 to a more manageable size, with Chilwell a potential candidate to be sold.

As per the report, City are interested in the former Leicester City defender, who Chelsea only signed in 2020 for £50m. However, injuries have plagued the fullback’s time in west London, restricting Chilwell to just 76 appearances over the course of three years.

With City in the market for a new left-back ahead of the potential departure of Joao Cancelo, Chilwell could be an ideal target for Pep Guardiola, who tried to sign the 26-year-old during his time as a Leicester player before the fullback’s move to Chelsea.

Indeed, the signing of Marc Cucurella could also play a role in Chelsea selling Chilwell, with Potter likely to favour his former Brighton & Hove Albion star in the long-term rather than the England international, who has only just returned from his latest injury setback.

And for City, the Manchester side would be foolish to pass up on the opportunity to sign Chilwell, who could be a fantastic squad option for Guardiola and potentially a starting player if the former Leicester man can maintain his fitness with the Etihad Stadium giants.

Chilwell’s time at Chelsea has been extraordinary if a bit odd, with the defender part of the 2021 UEFA Champions League-winning squad yet not really a player many would consider a constant fixture with the Blues. And for City, they simply must move for the fullback if the decision is made to sell the 26-year-old.

As we know, City will be in the market for a new left-back this summer, and with Chilwell potentially available, Guardiola and his team will find it hard to identify a better player in the market than the England international, who could leave for a good price.
