Chelsea have reportedly made a last-minute approach to sign Inter Milan midfielder and rumoured Liverpool target Nicolo Barella following a collapse in talks for Enzo Fernandez.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Blues are scrambling to find an alternative for the Argentine midfielder having seen their latest offer for the 22-year-old rebuffed by Benfica, with Barella now on Chelsea’s agenda on the final day of the transfer window.

However, as per the report, Chelsea’s approach has also been shot down, with Inter having zero intention of letting their £60m maestro leave so late in the January transfer window, with Liverpool also showing interest in the Italian international as reported by CalcioMercatoWeb.

With Chelsea looking to sign one last superstar name before the closure of the window, Barella would have been a sensible alternative to Fernadez. However, luckily for Liverpool, Inter’s response to such a proposal has been swiftly rejected, with the Blues now once again looking for another option.

Chelsea might have tried an audacious play to sign Barella this January, yet with the summer window already set to be one of the most explosive in recent memory, Liverpool have to ensure they are the ones who win the race for the Inter superstar.

As we know, Barella is one of the best central midfielders in Europe and a player who could work wonders for the likes of Chelsea or Liverpool, yet given what the Reds need in that area of the pitch, the Merseyside giants must do everything possible to sign the 25-year-old ahead of their west London rivals.
