Chelsea are again hunting for a new manager after Mauricio Pochettino’s exit.
Just as fans thought they were taking a step forward, it feels like everything has moved back to square one again.
On Tuesday, all eyes were on England’s training squad announcement for Euro 2024, but hours later, Chelsea were the ones who stole the headlines.
The club announced that they had ‘mutually parted ways’ with Mauricio Pochettino after only one season in charge and a sixth-placed finish.
The likes of Nicolas Jackson made their feelings pretty clear on the matter and now the powers that be have to bring in a new face.
It’s already a crowded market. Erik ten Hag is under fire at Manchester United, so they might be looking for a new manager soon. Bayern Munich have been looking for ages, Juventus have just booted out Massimiliano Allegri and you just don’t know what’s going on with Xavi Hernandez and Barcelona.
That’s a lot of elite jobs available or some that could yet hit the market, so who do Chelsea go for?
Before Pochettino, the powers that be at the club knocked on Brighton and Hove Albion’s door by bringing in Graham Potter.
It proved to be a disaster. But could they bring in another former Brighton coach?
Scott Minto admitted that he would ‘love’ Roberto De Zerbi at Chelsea and stated that he plays ‘purer football than Pep Guardiola’, as he told talkSPORT (21/05/24 at 7:45 pm).
The Italian is now a free agent after leaving the Amex Stadium at the end of the season – he guided them to an 11th-placed finish, after only last season, breaking a 122-year club record by securing European football for the first time.
Despite it ending on a sour note for De Zerbi at Brighton, Minto wouldn’t mind seeing him in Chelsea colours.
Roberto De Zerbi to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea
“Whilst I think it’s absolutely ridiculous, I am not wholly surprised with the way Pochettino has been talking over the last few weeks,” said Minto.
“I heard you talking about De Zerbi. From a football point of view, I would love for De Zerbi to be in charge of Chelsea.
“The way he plays. I have always said, he is asking his players to almost play a purer form than Pep Guardiola asks his players at Manchester City. He needs a higher class of player, with the greatest of respect to Brighton. But I still feel he would have absolute behind-the-scenes lightning with him and the owners. I don’t see him lasting long, either.”

Chelsea owners under pressure
A lot of money has been spent, a lot! But that won’t win over fans if the club continues down this current road.
It did actually feel like the club was making progress and they were going to be dangerous next season.

But that’s not the case now, which just puts the owners under pressure, especially if the next manager struggles.
If that new face comes in and isn’t near the top of the table, then the mood and feeling inside Stamford Bridge is going to be toxic.
Plus, it felt like Pochettino actually had a very good relationship with the players, yet that now needs to restart again and you just don’t know where it will end up.
