Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea did not want to sell Tino Livramento in the summer transfer window, and it was the right-back who decided to move to Southampton, according to The Athletic.
What’s the story?
Livramento joined Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton from Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
The transfer was completed on August 2.
The Guardian reported at the time that Southampton paid 2021 Champions League winners Chelsea £5 million in transfer fees for the teenager.
The Athletic have reported this morning that Chelsea did not actually want to sell the 18-year-old, who can operate as a wing-back or as a full-back on either flank.
The Blues spent months trying to convince the England Under-19 international to sign a new deal.
However, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Reece James ahead of him in the pecking order, Livramento decided to leave Chelsea for Southampton last month, according to the report.

Sensible move?
Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and it can be very tempting for any player to simply stay at Stamford Bridge.
It was very brave of Livramento to get out of his comfort zone and move to Southampton.
It was very sensible as well.

Azpilicueta and James are very good players, and Livramento would have struggled to get much, if any, playing time at Chelsea this season.
The 18-year-old right-back has already made three appearances in the Premier League for Southampton this season.
