There are conflicting reports regarding the future of Chelsea’s first choice left-back. The Sun claim that Ashley Cole will walk out of Chelsea on a free transfer next summer after rejecting a one-year offer to stay at the club. The 31-year-old’s contract runs out next year and the left-back is looking to stay with Chelsea but on a longer deal. Roman Abramovich is however reportedly refusing to sanction longer deals for players over the age of 30.

Press Association Sport counters that negotiations are ongoing and such reports of a rejection of a one-year offer are unfounded. Contract talks are believed to be amicable and Chelsea are confident they can tie up a deal for Ashley Cole. Whilst Chelsea are increasingly reluctant to offer older players long term contracts, each player’s contract renewal is judged on an individual basis and the club feel that Ashley Cole can indeed perform at the highest level for some years to come.

Gary Cahill believes his performances at Chelsea since joining from Bolton last January have proven him as an international-quality player. The defender concedes that there were doubts whilst he was at Bolton over his ability to perform at the highest levels of professional football but states that Champions League football has made him a better player.

The 26-year-old also spoke about Chelsea captain John Terry and the partnership the two have developed since his move to the club. Cahill asserts that the two have developed an understanding that could benefit England in the internationals if they were to both start. And he also had encouraging words for two other Chelsea and England teammates in Ryan Bertrand and Daniel Sturridge believing the two can compete for spots in the England squad for years to come.

Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski has cast doubt over his future with the club beyond this new season. Chelsea are amongst a host of European clubs – including United, Bayern and Juventus – who are tracking the Poland international and will have been alerted by his comments to German newspaper Bild: ‘I don’t set myself any limits. I don’t know what will be after this season’.
