Chelsea’s presence in the transfer market is so significant that it’s hard for other clubs to avoid being affected by their moves in one way or another.

It began when Liam Delap chose Chelsea over Man Utd, continued when Jadon Sancho returned to Old Trafford for £5m, and has now reached its peak with Bryan Mbeumo’s arrival.

And there could be more to come, with Alejandro Garnacho reportedly on Chelsea’s radar.

Meanwhile, their £45m move for a Ruben Amorim favourite has played a role in Man Utd securing the deal for Mbeumo.

Chelsea signed Geovany Quenda for £45m in 2025

When Ruben Amorim took over at Manchester United, there were a few Sporting players who seemed like natural fits for his style, and Geovany Quenda was high on that list.

But as it turns out, none of those players have actually joined the club. And that might be for the best.

The move that eventually brought Viktor Gyokeres into the picture actually started with Quenda, who played right wing-back in Amorim’s system at Sporting and really came into his own under the manager.

Chelsea wrapped up a £45m deal for him before the window even opened, pulling off a surprise double signing that also included Dario Essugo.

Just like that, another player who seemed a perfect fit for United ended up at one of their rivals, giving Amorim another headache to deal with.

But as things unfolded over the window, it became clear that this was the move needed to bring Mbeumo to Old Trafford.

How Quenda’s move to Chelsea opened the door for Bryan Mbeumo to join Man Utd

If you had told Manchester United fans at the start of the window that signing Mbeumo would mean Quenda ending up at Chelsea, most would have taken that trade without much hesitation.

Quenda is still very much a player for the future, while Mbeumo brings proven Premier League quality and still has plenty of prime years ahead.

Chelsea’s early move for Quenda meant United had to adjust their plans, with right wing-back suddenly becoming a position in need of attention.

With Quenda no longer an option, Amorim turned to Amad, moving him permanently into the right wing-back role where he’d already shown promise last season and into this one.

That shift freed up a spot behind the striker, leading United to target Mbeumo alongside Matheus Cunha as part of a wider overhaul of their attacking options.

The domino effect was clear: missing out on Quenda led to Amad filling in at wing-back and opened space for Mbeumo further forward.

While Quenda’s upside remains high, United appear better balanced now with Mbeumo and Cunha operating as dual No. 10s and Amad solidifying his place on the right flank.
