Chelsea could reportedly speed up their interest to sign rumoured Newcastle United target Leandro Trossard, with the Belgian international starring against the Blues this weekend for Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to journalist and Belgian football expert Sacha Tavolieri, the west London side could accelerate their interest in Trossard ahead of the January transfer window as Chelsea look to sign the 27-year-old, with many Premier League clubs interested in the Brighton star ahead of the winter market.

Fellow journalist Graeme Bailey told the Talking Transfers Podcast that the Seagulls could sell the winger for £25m in January as Trossard’s deal heads into its final six months, with Newcastle and Chelsea just two of the sides interested in signing the Belgian international.

However, whilst Newcastle have the funds to match whatever Chelsea can offer, Graham Potter’s tenure at the Blues gives Eddie Howe’s side a clear disadvantage in the race to land the winger, with the former Brighton boss seemingly keen to reunite with the Seagulls star.

Indeed, Trossard is seemingly ready for the next step in his career. And although Chelsea is a step too far for the attacker, Potter being in charge of the Blues will give the winger hope that he can succeed at Stamford Bridge despite Newcastle being clearly the more suitable club for the forward.

Potter’s impact at Chelsea has been nothing short of incredible, with the English manager’s recent loss to former side Brighton the only real hiccup the coach has experienced since taking the Blues job. And because of his links to Trossard, Newcastle will seemingly have no shot of landing the winger.

After all, Trossard will be confident in his abilities to play for a club as big as Chelsea. And whilst Newcastle would be a better next step for the 27-year-old, the pull of European football and reuniting with Potter will be too great for the Brighton star to reject in January.
