If Antonio Conte leaves Chelsea as expected then could he replace Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid rather than Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino?
Zinedine Zidane, manager of Real Madrid, looks on during the Copa del Rey, Quarter Final, Second Leg match against Leganes.
Zinedine Zidane has admitted that defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League will cost him his Real Madrid job less than a year after becoming the first manager in modern history to win the competition in successive years.
Zidane was heralded back in May when Madrid lifted the biggest prize in European club football for the second year running, but less than 12 months on and the Frenchman is on the verge of dismissal.
That is because Los Blancos trail leaders Barcelona by 19 points in La Liga and were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Leganes at the quarter-final stage.
Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo reacts at the end of the Spanish league football match against Villarreal.
When asked if a loss to PSG would see him sacked, Zidane answered: “Of course.
“That is really clear. I am responsible for this, I’m the coach. So I must find solutions.”
Who would succeed Zidane at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is unclear currently, but Tottenham Hotspur fans are likely to be concerned that Mauricio Pochettino would be high on the wishlist after an impressive few years in North London and finishing ahead of Real in the Champions League group stage.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino awaits kick off in the English Premier League football match against Southampton.
Especially as when questioned if he could be the next boss of the Spanish giants, Pochettino responded: “You never known what will happen in football.”
Yet the one saving grace for Spurs could be across the English capital at Chelsea, with the Daily Mail reporting that Antonio Conte will leave Stamford Bridge no later than the summer.
Only last month the Sun claimed that Conte was one of Madrid’s targets and with obtaining the Italian from the Blues looking to be a much simpler process than getting Pochettino from Tottenham, perhaps that could be the route they take.
