Danny Murphy says Chelsea are ‘losing their marbles’ as owner Todd Boehly is set to push through a British record £105 million transfer for Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentina World Cup winner was on the transfer radar of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool this month, but when clubs like Chelsea are playing Football Manager, then not many are going to have a chance.
From stealing Ukraine winger Mykhailo Mudryk underneath the noses of Arsenal to paying £20 million for Carney Chukwuemeka, when he was a bench player at Aston Villa and had less than 12 months remaining on his contract.
There is no end to the crazy lengths Chelsea are going to improve their squad, and so far, they are getting who they want.
Whilst Klopp watches his team suffer on the pitch, just like Graham Potter is enduring at Stamford Bridge, at least the Englishman is getting serious backing in the transfer window.
Nonetheless, with Fernandez set to secure a British record transfer to Chelsea, this is what Murphy had to say, as he told talkSPORT (30/01/23).
“I know you don’t get flustered these days because of the number of transfers you are hearing about, some of them are gobsmacking,” said Murphy.
“This one is bizarre, for me. He is a good player. He is a steady player. He’s young and talented. And will get better. Plays that role really well. Neat and tidy, with decent creativity. He gets about, but he isn’t the biggest or the quickest.
“But £100 million?! I mean they are losing their marbles, Chelsea, aren’t they?!”
WILL CHELSEA OVERTAKE LIVERPOOL?
The duo have been surprise packages in the Premier League this season – and for the wrong reasons.
As things stand, Chelsea are sitting tenth in the table, level on points with ninth-placed Liverpool, who have played a game less.
But, if you go by incomings during the transfer window and the lift that is bringing, then it seems as though the West London club are most likely to get out of their current slump than those from Merseyside.
