Celtic have dominated domestically over recent seasons, but have struggled on the continent.
Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas took a swipe at the Hoops’ lack of ambition in the transfer market, when speaking on Sky Sports following his former club’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last night.
Celtic have been totally dominant in Scotland over the past five years, but have really struggled to establish themselves in the Champions League, after failing to spend the kind of money required to bring top-tier players to the club.
Brendan Rodgers’ side were once again humbled in Europe last night, as they came up against a far superior Bayern side, and Nicholas, who scored 85 league goals for the Glasgow giants during two separate spells at Parkhead, did not hold back in his criticism of his former club, when speaking to Sky Sports:
“Celtic have always gone on the cheap route. I used to be quite hard on Celtic at this level because it is the true judgement, for me. It’s not domestically because they’re far too good for everybody.”
After a return of just three points from their opening three Group B games, qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League now seems like an almost impossible task for the Hoops.
In the meantime though, Celtic will have to re-focus their efforts on domestic competition, with a trip to Hibernian in the Betfred next up on the agenda, before they travel to Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership the following Wednesday.
