Melo leaves Sheffield Wednesday after two and a half years.

Chaves have announced the arrival of Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Filipe Melo on a permanent contract.

A statement on the Portuguese top flight side’s official website confirms the Owls man has signed a three-year deal at Estádio Municipal de Chaves.

Melo arrived at Hillsborough two in February 2015 and made six appearances in blue and white that season.

But after injury struck later that year he would never get a chance to add to his tally and spent the latter half of the 2016-17 campaign back in Portugal, on loan to Pacos Ferreira.

No fee has been disclosed by Chaves, who have signed the 27-year-old more than 11 months before his Wednesday deal was due to end.

Melo might not be the only out-of-favour Owls midfielder on his way out of Hillsborough this summer, with Lewis McGugan currently looking to impress their Championship rivals Cardiff City on trial.

McGugan scored six goals in 17 games throughout 2015-16, but was transfer listed a year ago and hasn’t played since competitively.
