Leeds United winger Jordan Botaka’s loan spell at Charlton Athletic is not going according to plan.

The DR Congo international spent almost all season on the bench for Leeds in 2015/16 after signing from Excelsior, and had hoped dropping down to League One would see him get regular game time.

It has not panned out as he would have hoped, failing to make a single start for the Addicks all season.

After news of his continued benching was confirmed at the weekend for Charlton’s 1-0 home defeat to Rochdale, fans took to Twitter to lament the decision of manager Russell Slade, and continued to do so during the game.

Botaka did get onto the pitch for the final nine minutes of the fixture, but there was too little time for him to make an impact.

The winger needs game time to make a success of his loan spell, especially considering he has the African Cup of Nations tournament upcoming in January.

Charlton are hardly sitting pretty in the table, slumped in only 18th place with 12 points from 11 games.

It is understandable why fans are calling for the involvement of a player as skilful and entertaining as Botaka, and they could do worse than give him a run in the side and see what he can do.
