QPR’s Jordan Cousins may be in need of a short-term return to Charlton Athletic once he returns from his injury hell

Hong Kong Pegasus to Charlton Athletic; it’s fair to say Steve Gallen has not chosen a particularly customary career path. According to Kent Live, the 43-year-old has been appointed as the new Head of Recruitment at The Valley as manager Karl Robinson, who has known Gallen for 15 years, continues his sweeping changes behind the scenes.

The Addicks are currently stuck slap bang in the middle of the League One table. Therefore, Gallen’s first priority must be to identify a number of astute transfer targets to ensure Charlton at least threaten a return to the Championship next season.

His first port of call? Well, returning to the club where he spent over two decades wouldn’t be a bad place to start.

Highly-rated midfielder Jordan Cousins has had a lively debut season at Queens Park Rangers cut short through injury, meaning his appearances stopped at 20. The 23-year-old impressed in fits and bursts at Loftus Road but, without a single goal or assist to his name, he still has to prove that he belongs in the second tier.

And it may be a concern that, in Cousins’ absence, QPR manager Ian Holloway recruited heavily to improve his midfield options. Pawel Wszolek, Luke Freeman and Sean Goss have all arrived since the turn of the year while 20-year-old Ryan Manning continues to go from strength to strength.

Furthermore, troubled prospect Ravel Morison signed on loan from Lazio with a view to a permanent deal while Holloway told the Kilburn Times that he would jump at the chance of signing Brighton-owned Kazenga Lua Lua at the end of his temporary stay.

Needless to say, Cousins could return to find he has slipped some way down the pecking order.

Therefore, a short-term loan to the Charlton, the club where he developed into one of the Football League’s brightest prospects, could help him rediscover that magical touch.

And Gallen’s QPR connections make a potential deal all the more likely.
