The Leeds United player has had a transfer request turned down but that might not stop West Bromwich Albion chancing their hand with a significant bid.
While Leeds United fans will be hoping Charlie Taylor is still with them when the transfer window slams shut, they will know for that all the club’s resilience to date they risk losing him for considerably less if they wait until January.
For that reason, West Bromwich Albion would be wise to continue their pursuit, as reported by the BBC, as long as they can.
Leeds recently rejected a transfer request from Taylor and it seems likely the 22-year-old will still at Elland Road at least for the first half of the new season.
He should do too, with the Whites giving him his breakthrough just 18 months ago and deserving some loyalty in return.
The problem is, with less than a year remaining on his current contract and no sign of a new one being signed this is the last month when Leeds can command a decent fee for one of the most exciting left-backs in the country.
Deadline day is often about panic buys and last-minute loans, but it is also about those moves that ultimately prove inevitable.
That is not necessarily the case with Taylor but West Brom should push for a deal right up until August 31, knowing that the right offer will be hard to turn down given the youngster’s situation.
The Baggies have been quiet in the transfer window to date, but signing Taylor would lay down a marker for the new campaign, bringing in a highly rated youngster with the talent to one day challenge Luke Shaw for an England spot.
For that very reason Leeds will want him to stay, but much could be down to just how high West Brom are willing to go and how late in the day they are prepared to negotiate.
