Leeds United defender Charlie Taylor has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that his side can finish in the top six of the Championship this season.

Taylor, who can play as a left-back or as a left-winger, has pointed at Leeds’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend as a reason to be optimistic.

The Whites got the better of Wednesday 2-0 away from home at the Hillsborough Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Marcus Antonsson opened the scoring for Leeds in the 63rd minute of the match, and Chris Wood added the second five minutes before full time.

Taylor, who is 22 years of age, has suggested that the win against Wednesday, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League at the end of last season, underlines the quality in the current Leeds squad.

“Sheffield Wednesday are one of the promotion favourites and we’ve gone and turned them over at their own place,” Taylor told The Yorkshire Evening Post.

“We’ve made a good few signings and there’s no reason why we can’t get up there in the table.

“At the start of the season the gaffer said top six and if you’re not aiming for the top six then there’s no point in going out there every week.”

The win against Wednesday on Saturday afternoon was Leeds’s first in the Championship this season.

Garry Monk’s side will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on League Two outfit Luton Town away from home at Kenilworth Road in the second round of the EFL Cup.
