Everton have been struggling and the Toffees boss appears on thin ice at Goodison Park now.
Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has claimed that Everton manager Marco Silva has only been able to hang on to his Goodison Park job as long as he has due to the Toffees home record – but appeared to suggest that the axe is “getting close” (SSN website).
The Portuguese has endured a woeful start to the new Premier League season, coming under intense pressure after eight matches due to a number of lacklustre performances which has left the Goodison Park side a lowly 18th in the standings.
With just seven points from their opening eight league games, four defeats in a row and losses to sides they would have been favourites against – Sheffield United, Bournemouth and Burnley to name a few – there is a lot of discontent amongst sections of the Everton fanbase at present.
All this has come following a summer of seemingly good business in the transfer market for Everton, including the signings of Moise Kean, Alex Iwobi and Fabian Delph, plus the permanent acquisition of Andre Gomes from Barcelona.
Sespite all this, Silva remains at the helm of the Toffees, whose record at Goodison Park this season stands at two Premier League wins and two defeats (Transfermarkt), while last season they won 10 and drew four of their games on home soil.
Looking ahead to their Saturday meeting with West Ham, Nicholas wrote on Sky Sports News: “This is an interesting game. Marco Silva is still there and has a thumbs up from owners. West Ham are a dangerous side, and I expect them to finish in the top half and Everton to finish in the bottom half.
“Their home record has been the reason Silva is still there. The Man City game was a game which was nothing to lose. This is a must-win I think – we don’t have the authority or power to say that but it looks like it is getting close.”
