Tottenham Hotspur’s defence has looked alarmingly poor in recent weeks, with both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld struggling.

Charlie Nicholas has told Sporting Life that Tottenham Hotspur defenders, Jan Vertonghen’s and Toby Alderweireld’s, partnership at the back now ranks among the Premier League’s worst.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen have both struggled over the early weeks of the season at Tottenham, with the duo looking out of sorts.

The Belgian pair were ran ragged by Brighton & Hove Albion striker Aaron Connolly during Tottenham’s last match, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side slipped to a 3-0 defeat.

And Nicholas now has severe concerns about the quality of the two Tottenham players.

“Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld used to have one of the best partnerships in the Premier League, and now is one of the worst in the Premier League,” he said.

The comments seem very harsh on two of Tottenham’s most important players over the years, but their form this season has been alarmingly poor.

Both Alderweireld and Vertonghen are out of contract at the end of the season, and question marks have been raised over their commitment.

It now remains to be seen whether Pochettino will stick by his experienced pair, or turn to Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth with Spurs back in action at the weekend.

Tottenham are due to take on bottom of the table Watford at the weekend, and there is big pressure on them to take the three points.
