Charlie Nicholas questions why Rangers target Derek McInnes would make Ibrox switch before next summer

Glasgow Rangers are still looking for their next manager, with Derek McInnes being heavily linked with the Ibrox post.

Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports Daily on Sky Sports (broadcast on 29th November 2017 from 11:00 am) that he cannot understand why Derek McInnes would be interested in the Rangers job right now, and advised the Aberdeen boss that if he wants the Ibrox post, he should wait until the end of the season.

It has been more than a month since Pedro Caixinha was dismissed by the Gers, and McInnes has undoubtedly been linked with the post more than any other name has.

BBC Sport reports that McInnes has said that he has no plans to leave Pittodrie for the job, but with Sky Bet consistently listing him as the heavy favourite and with the post still yet to be filled, it seems unlikely that the speculation surrounding the former Gers midfielder will stop until an appointment is actually confirmed.

But ahead of McInnes’ men’s Scottish Premiership clash with Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday, Nicholas has suggested that he would not consider making the move to take the job if he was in McInnes’ shoes – not until the summer at least.

“If you’re Derek McInnes right now, I would say ‘why would I go to Rangers? They’ve got a lot of rebuilding to do, their team’s pretty average, we’re above them in the table. I have a better philosophy here’,” he told Sky Sports Daily on Sky Sports (broadcast on 29th November 2017 from 11:00 am).

“If I’m Derek McInnes right now, if I’m going to join Rangers, I would not join now, I would wait until the summer before I would start negotiations.”

While Nicholas does not believe that McInnes should take the job at the moment, it could certainly be argued that if he wants the post, now is as good a time as any to take it on.

Joining now will surely mean that the expectation would be lower during his first few months in the role than they would be if he joined in the summer and had that full transfer window to make changes to the squad. If he was appointed now, he would have the time to assess the squad over the coming months, and it may boost his chances of hitting the ground running from next season.
