Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that he believes Leeds United will progress into the quarter-final of the League Cup with a penalty shootout win over Burnley.

The Championship leaders travel to Turf Moor on Tuesday hoping to provide an upset by eliminating the in-form Premier League side, who sit seventh in their table.

As a result, Clarets boss Sean Dyche might name a weakened side and rest his heavy hitters with one eye on Saturday’s visit of Huddersfield Town.

Leeds are coming off the back of their first defeat of the season following a 1-0 reverse at Millwall this past weekend and Thomas Christiansen’s side will be aiming to bounce back as soon as possible – and a scalp in the form of a Premier League club could be an ideal tonic.

In any case, Nicholas, speaking to Sky Sports, has predicted “plenty of goals”, but believes that the Whites will edge into the last eight by way of a shootout.

He said: “I could see Leeds being awkward and dragging this one to penalties, when it becomes a lottery, so I’m going for an upset here as well.

Sean Dyche manager of Burnley gestures during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Burnley at Stamford Bridge on August 12, 2017 in London, England.

“It always surprises me that clubs don’t go for a cup when they are going well, but I can’t see Sean Dyche going full strength here and I’m not sure who Burnley bring in at the back, so they should be vulnerable.

“Leeds are a decent side and have started well. I see it being a feisty affair and I can see both teams having a go and their defensive changes giving us plenty of goals.”

Christiansen has bigger fish to fry as well, with Leeds going so well in the Championship so far and the 44-year-old might also preserve some of his big names ahead of Saturday’s visit of Ipswich Town at Elland Road.
